Nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.
– Benjamin Franklin
Sometimes we just need to face the negative emotions and events in our lives head on. Attempting to generate a sense of peace and calm, in an effort to cope, is natural – but the negative emotions themselves will need confronting and understanding if we wish them to have less power over us next time.
Actually, there are a few more certainties in life other than death and taxes. I’ve chosen to focus on just 3 of those below…
Failure
You will fail. Many times. Get that straight in your mind right now. You’re no different from anyone else in that regard.
Successful people fail all the time. If all you learn from your failure is to throw in the towel, you’re learning the wrong lesson.
So, yes, you will fail: but fail forwards.
Frustration
The world is not here to serve your purpose or fulfil your dreams. That’s your job.
Frustration is related to failure, anger and entitlement – something hasn’t gone the way you hoped, planned or wished.
Frustration is what you feel when things don’t go your way, but feel they really should have.
You can feel frustrated when action or movement is blocked by elements outside your control.
Be careful with this emotion – if you focus on your frustrations, and how life “is not fair”, you can start to feel like you’re being persecuted.
You’re then in danger of developing a “poor me” persona, even if that’s not normally part of your character.
You are not being persecuted, and the world is not out to get you, even if it seems so.
If you feel this way, go ask a victim of genuine persecution how fair life feels for them.
Then give your head a wobble, stop feeling sorry for yourself and stand up straight.
Disappointment
Whereas frustration is linked to anger and entitlement, disappointment can be linked to sadness, loss, ethical concerns or simply moving from a higher energy level to a lower one.
We can be disappointed by so many things – governments, society, institutions in general, people we know, friends, loved ones and ourselves.
Real disappointment is simply the feeling we have when an expected outcome fails to become reality, or a preferred state of things does not last as long as we wished.
Dwelling on our feelings about our frustrations is damaging – focus on the solutions to them instead.
So disappointment is not a useless emotion. It can be a teacher. It’s utility comes from what we learn about ourselves in that moment, and what we feel we can do to effect change. It can even be the point at which we pivot, and discard a long held belief, ideal or dream because it has now been shown to be false and no longer serves us or anyone else.
Life will always offer you disappointment – this will only become an issue if you dwell on the sense of loss and sadness, instead of using that recognition of your disappointment to provoke change or move on.
One final note on disappointment – when you feel you are riding the crest of a wave, remember that this is always a temporary emotional state. There will always be a ‘come down’ or levelling out after riding that wave, which can feel disappointing.
The key to managing both crest and trough well is to remain centred.
So.. do not hide from yourself!
Face your failures, frustrations and disappointments head on. Deal with the way you feel about them, by accepting them as the lessons they are. Learn the lessons, develop resilience and march forwards.
